Energy Efficiency Strategies for Industrial Manufacturing: Technological and Managerial Perspectives

Background and Purpose: Industrial manufacturing is a major contributor to global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, making energy efficiency central to sustainable development and industrial competitiveness. This review examines technological and managerial strategies for improving energy performance in manufacturing and evaluates how technical innovation, organizational practices, and policy support interact to produce sustained efficiency gains.
Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted using Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. The corrected historical search window covered literature published from 2005 through November 2023. The review followed PRISMA-based procedures for study identification, screening, eligibility assessment, and inclusion. Nineteen studies meeting the predefined criteria were synthesized qualitatively across technological and managerial domains.
Findings: The reviewed evidence indicates that integrated energy-efficiency strategies can reduce industrial energy consumption by approximately 10–30%, depending on sector and implementation depth. Process optimization and digital technologies, including IIoT and AI-enabled monitoring, showed the largest reported savings, while energy management systems, organizational practices, and behavioral interventions supported continuous and scalable improvements. Policy measures and energy audits further facilitated adoption.
Theoretical Contributions: The review consolidates technological, managerial, and policy perspectives into a socio-technical view of industrial energy efficiency. It demonstrates that performance improvements depend not only on efficient equipment and digital technologies but also on management systems, organizational culture, continuous improvement, and enabling regulation.
Conclusions and Policy Implications: Long-term industrial energy efficiency requires a holistic strategy that combines technical upgrades with structured energy management and supportive policy frameworks. Industry leaders should integrate digital monitoring, process optimization, and ISO 50001-aligned management practices, while policymakers should strengthen incentives, audit mechanisms, and capacity-building support, particularly for resource-constrained small and medium-sized enterprises.
